Blocked drains in London
Emergency blocked drains in London
If drains are backing up, stop running water in the house and check whether neighbours have the same problem. A drain serving only your home is usually yours. A shared drain or sewer may be Thames Water's, since it took over most private sewers in 2011. Sewage inside a basement or ground floor flat is an emergency.

Blocked drains
- Water rising out of the gully or manhole outside
- Sinks, showers and toilets draining slowly at the same time
- Gurgling from plugholes when another fitting is used
- A strong sewage smell indoors or in the garden
- Sewage coming up in a basement or lower ground floor flat
- Drains overflowing in heavy rain
Step by step
What happens from the first message to the written note at the end.
- 1
Work out whose drain it is
We lift the nearest manhole cover and see whether it is full or flowing. That tells us if the blockage is in your section, a shared section or the public sewer.
- 2
Clear the blockage
Rods or a jetter clear grease, wipes, roots and silt from your pipework. If the blockage is in Thames Water's section, we tell you so you can report it.
- 3
Check the flow
We run water through every fitting and watch the chamber to make sure it is clear all the way.
- 4
Look for the cause
If it keeps blocking, a camera survey can show a cracked pipe, root entry or a sag. We tell you what we found and what it would take to fix.
Yours, the building's or Thames Water's
On 1 October 2011 the law changed and Thames Water became responsible for most private sewers and lateral drains, the shared pipes and the pipes running outside your boundary. You are still responsible for the pipes between your building and that transferred sewer or drain, plus all internal plumbing.
Thames Water's own advice is to ask your neighbours first. If they have no problem, it is probably on your section. If they do, it may be on a shared section that Thames Water looks after. In a block or a converted house, the drains under and around the building that serve all the flats are usually the freeholder's, so tell the managing agent too.
London's Victorian sewers and basement flats
Much of central London drains into the combined sewer system built by Joseph Bazalgette in the 1860s and 1870s, which carries sewage and rainwater in the same pipes. In heavy rain the system can fill up, and water finds the lowest way out. That is often a basement toilet, a lower ground floor shower or a yard gully.
If sewage comes into a basement only in heavy rain, the cause may be the sewer, not a blockage in your pipes. Thames Water has a sewer flooding help service and, in some flood prone streets, has fitted non return valves that stop sewage flowing back into homes. If it happens with no rain at all, it is more likely a blockage nearby.
What not to put down London drains
Most emergency drain calls come back to the same few things: cooking fat that sets in the pipes, wet wipes that do not break down, and food waste from kitchen sinks. In older houses, tree roots can get into clay drain joints. Hard water scale in waste pipes narrows them slowly, so a small amount of fat or hair blocks them faster.
If you share a drain with neighbours, a blockage you did not cause can still back up into your home first. That is worth knowing before an argument starts.
What to do in the first ten minutes
Stop using water in the building, including the washing machine and dishwasher, so you are not adding to the backup. If the water is dirty, keep children and pets away and wear gloves. If sewage is near sockets or appliances in a basement, switch off at the consumer unit if you can do it without standing in water.
Then check outside. Lift the manhole cover nearest the house if you can do so safely. If it is full, the blockage is further down the line. If it is empty while your gully overflows, the blockage is between the house and that chamber. Ask the neighbours whether their drains are slow. All of this helps you and the plumber decide quickly whether it is your drain, the building's or one for Thames Water.

Every job is priced after a look at it, by photo or a visit, and agreed before work starts.
What affects the price
Access to the chamber, how far down the blockage is, whether rods or a jetter are needed and whether a camera survey is wanted all affect the cost. If the blockage is in Thames Water's section, you report it to them.

| Clearing a blocked gully or short run | price confirmed after a look at the job |
| Jetting a longer or repeat blockage | quote on survey |
| CCTV drain camera survey | quote on survey |

Asked questions
Does Thames Water unblock drains for free?
Thames Water deals with blockages in the public sewers and the private sewers and lateral drains it took over in 2011. Blockages in the pipes that serve only your property, inside your boundary, are yours to clear.
Sewage is coming up in my basement. What do I do?
Keep away from the water, turn off electrics in the area if it is safe, stop using water in the building and report it. If it is from the public sewer, Thames Water's sewer flooding service can help.
My neighbours' drains are blocked too. Who do I call?
That suggests a shared section. Report it to Thames Water, as it may be one of the shared drains it took over in 2011.
Can you stop drains backing up in heavy rain?
A non return valve can stop sewage flowing back into low drains. Whether it suits your home needs a survey, and Thames Water should be told about any sewer flooding.
